The agenda for each meeting will go on the website along with a brief summary after the meeting of the business discussed. If you would like the full minutes or to get in touch with the Parent Council on issues, please contact the School Office. Parent Councils have now replaced School Boards, and Gleniffer High School Parent Council is up and running. The main objectives of the Parent Council are:
#to work in partnership with the School to create a welcoming school which is inclusive for all parents
#to promote partnership between the School, its pupils, all its parents and the wider community
#to develop and engage in activities which support the education and welfare of the pupils
#to identify and represent the views of parents on the education provided by the School and others matters affecting the education and welfare of the pupils.
There’s a lot more in the Constitution about how the Parent Council will actually go about things and you can check this by clicking on the link below or by asking the School Office for a copy.
Any parent, guardian or carer is welcome to attend Parent Council meetings as an observer. The meetings are held in the School Library at 7pm for 7.15pm and the programme for school year 2009/10 is:

NOTES OF PARENT COUNCIL MEETING 26 OCTOBER 2009
There was discussion about a Parents Information evening to be held with input from Strathclyde Police, Health Education and Fire & Rescue services, this is likely to be held sometime in March. More information will be supplied nearer then
Mr Nicholls gave his report starting with the success of the school MOSAIC, which was revealed at Braehead Shopping Centre on 2 October. This was a very successful day with the school receiving lots of very popular coverage in the local newspapers.
He confirmed that for the immediate future the Newsletter would continue to be sent out to parents as it is a vital link with the school, and at present the best way to ensure that they receive it.
The recent visit to the school by the new members of the Parent Council was very successful, and all were very impressed at the calmness and industriousness displayed in the classrooms.
The Primary 7 presentations have been carried out in the 5 feeder primary schools, these were very well received and everyone is looking forward to the Open night on Wednesday 28 October.
The impact of the 33 period week on pupils and staff is continuing to be monitored, with all input being recorded for future discussion.
Next year’s activity week is to hold the most number of residential trips ever, with no less than 7 on offer, there will also, as before, be a varied timetable of day trips on offer, details being issued this week.
Last but not least, the Parent Council is there to represent the views of parents, if you have any subject or issue that you would like to be addressed at any meeting please email enquiries@glenifferhigh.renfrewshire.sch.uk
Next meeting is Monday 23 November at 7.15

January Minutes

David Rae welcomed everyone to the very well attended meeting.
Arrangements for the parent’s information evening mentioned in the October bulletin have been finalised, this will be at 7pm on Thursday 18 March 2010, among the subjects to be covered will be presentations from Fiona Nero, school nurse, a fire and rescue presentation, child protection information and information for young carers. We hope that the evening will be a great success.
Mr Nicholls and staff will be giving out letters to parents attempting to drive into the school grounds to drop off or pick up their child. This is to remind them that there is no vehicle access to the school campus and to inform them that they must use the drop off zone in order to minimise potential accidents.
On Monday there is to be a collection in the social area to raise funds for the Haiti appeal, we hope people will give there change from lunch for this worthy cause.
Mr Nicholls told the council how successful the recent Christmas events held by the school have been. The outing to the pantomime and carnival were very well attended and everyone taking part had a great time. The talent show was a huge success with a special guest appearance of local star and former pupil, Jill Jackson, who was very well received by all, and also raised £1000 for Cash for Kids. Well done to all taking part.
The head boy and girl gave their report on the success of the 5 & 6 yr Christmas dance, at which all had a great time. They also reported that rehearsals for the school show start on Thursday. The show will be High School Musical and will be held on 8-11 June with a matinee on Monday 7th. Good luck to all taking part in the show and to the organisers. The Rag Bag appeal for recycling textile is underway and bags should be returned on 4 February.
Next meeting 22 February 2010

February Minutes
|
David Rae welcomed everybody to the meeting, though there were several apologies this month.
Letters have been sent out inviting parents to the Information Evening on Thursday 18 March. There has been a limited response so far and there was a discussion on other ways of promoting the evening.
David Rae has received a response from the Scottish Government regarding the provision of study leave during exam periods. It seems that there is some flexibility in the guidance from the government and that it is a Renfrewshire Council decision on whether or not to allow study leave during Prelims.
George McLachlan, Link education manager from Renfrewshire Council Education and Leisure Services, attended the meeting to report on the Establishment Review of the school which had taken place in November 2009. Mr McLachlan reported that the outcome of the review was very good. Of the 11 quality indicators that were assessed during the review, eight were classified as very good and the remaining three were all good.
Mr Nicholls reported that there had been a very good turnout of parents at the S2 option evening, which was managed by the guidance staff. There will be another additional in-service day for staff on 27 May 2010 for preparation of the new Curriculum for Excellence which will be introduced in August for those starting in the school in S1.
Mr Nicholls also reported on the introduction of a Paired Reading Club for first years. Interested pupils are paired with volunteers, mostly from fifth year, to read for 20 minutes on Wednesday and Friday lunchtimes. Mr Nicholls plans to hold parent Focus Groups with parents of pupils in second, fourth and sixth year in the near future.
The Head Girl and Deputy Head Boy reported that their time had been dominated by exams in recent weeks. The Haiti appeal raised £867 through collecting change and donations from pupils and staff. The recent Rag Bag appeal raised £138, which at 30p per kilo means 460 kg of unwanted clothing, shoes and textiles was collected, a very good response.
The school has been supporting Fairtrade Fortnight and the Parent Council confirmed their support for Fairtrade activities in the school.
The next meeting is on Monday 29 March 2010 at 7.15 pm.

March Minutes
|
David Rae welcomed those present to the meeting, although several members were unable to attend this month.
In a change from the norm Mr Nicholls started the meeting with his update on events in the school since the last meeting. Mr Nicholls gave an update on those teachers who are due to retire and the plans to fill the positions. He also provided an overview of the decision making process that was undertaken on the day the school was closed due to the adverse weather conditions. As mentioned last month Mr Nicholls will be holding parents’ focus groups in the near future, the first one was for parents of S6 pupils, unfortunately only one of the twelve invited parents turned up. Before leaving to attend another engagement Mr Nicholls also gave us a quick overview of the many successes that have taken place during the last month in the school. There was a lot of interest in the World Maths Day Challenge and plans are afoot to have a Parent Council team enter next year.
David Rae has written again to Holyrood to seek further clarification on the issue of study leave for pupils during Prelim exams. The guidance has been checked by David & Mr Nicholls and is clear that there should be no study leave provided except when SQA exams are taking place. David will update us all once a reply is received.
There was a disappointing turnout at the Parents Information Evening. Despite letters being sent out twice and a text message sent to parents only eleven people came along. Those that did attend were treated to excellent presentations on the fire service, child protection and the internet and sexual health.
There was a discussion about how communication from the school could be improved as there is increasing evidence that parents are not receiving information that is sent out. Greater use of email is to be considered.
The withdrawal of school buses for some pupils has been raised as a concern by one parent at the school. The Parent Council has not been invited to attend any meetings with the council or MSPs. The view of the Parent Council is that, whilst it is regrettable that a change in the provision is being made, it is understandable given the budgetary constraints of Renfrewshire Council, is within the statutory requirements and is also in-line with the majority of other Local Authorities.
The meeting closed with a discussion on future priorities for the Parent Council and any input from parents with children at the school would be very welcome.
The next meeting will be held on Monday 26th April at 7.15 pm in the school library. Any parent, guardian or carer is welcome to attend as an observer.
